Norwegian Star in Skagway

Back from Alaska and we rush off the ship to wait (A routine not exclusive to the Armed services and Trucking). The waiting was for my parents whom we carpooled with had, decided to get off the ship freestyle. Being new to cruises I wasn’t fully aware that there is actually a much more stringent form of vacationing. The truth is that many of us do better with a structured environment and agenda, but one would think that being poured into this mold in our daily work life, a less structured vacation would be more desirous. Apparently someone in the cruise industry arrived at the same conclusion, hence the idea for “freestyle” cruising was born. This format allows for a very casual dress for most meals, and even though there is a formal night scheduled for dinner, casual was still the approved dress. Formal is essentially scheduled as an excuse for all to present themselves for photos (which of course is an entirely other industry related to the vacationing cruisers). Although I haven’t gone on a traditional cruise there is simply no way I would go on anything but a “freestyle” cruise, one of the reasons being, what they call casual I consider formal wear.

I was rather frustrated that I have become rather addicted to roboform for my password protection and as yet have not put that in portable format onto a usb flashdrive. If I had done so I would have had the passwords for my blog and email, which I of course couldn’t install on any computer in a internet cafe. I bring this up simply because cost on ship wasn’t quite as high as I had previously understood and there were multiple internet cafe’s available in all Alaska port cities but Skagway. Cell service was available once we traveled back into Amerian waters, and since most ports were in Alaska there was little roaming. Only in Canada where we spent a brief 6 hours were we out of national network.

We arrived back in Spokane on Sunday afternoon around 1500 PDT so I wasn’t able to check on my truck which was left at Volvo of Spokane for warranty work. Once I was able to call them on Monday morning planning to once again hit the road, I learned that they had actually lost the list of things I wanted them to look over and fix. Although I will make use of this respite from the relaxation of the cruise, I and our bank account are none to happy for this forced extended vacation.
