Well… ok, probably not…. But All my wishes and all my prayers are that YOU have a very happy and Prosperous and Blessed New Year.

All the rushing around doing the last minute shopping to make sure we have all the proper items for our cruise up the Pacific Coast and up the inside passage of Alaska to spend the week enjoying the scenery and the luxurious appointments of the Norweigan Star. Looking forward to gaining lots of weight on the fine food and getting drunk in the reunion of family members. It will be something to be able to put off even thinking of making scheduled deliveries much less the daily grind bumping around the cab of the Sleeperberth Cast. Should be lots of stories to tell, unless we take on the motto of Las Vegas. Time will tell. To all of you still keeping the world moving, be safe and prosperous.

My deepest most sincere apologies. This time I was interruppted because I had to move away from the wifi and take care of a break down. I will have to wait till later to repost #78. This should be the last time I do this. Again it seems to be a jpeg in cunjunction with an interrupted upload that causes this problem with Slapcast. Roger Strickland hasn’t gotten back with me, but I’m confident he will look into this.

Again, my most sincere apologies.. if you are getting this in Itunes you may have to delete and resubscribe to make the feed work. I sincerely hope this is the last time this will happen.

I recently spoke offhandedly in a podcast about what a really wise man would do. I posited that a wise man would not hold ownership of lots of money or even stocks and bonds but would be able to use himself as the means to a good lifestyle. Not sure if this quite fills the bill, but here is Kyle who has traded one red paperclip for a house in the span of a year, as reported on Boing Boing and earlier interviewed by CNN and Chris Pirillo.

Dvorak Uncensored » Microsoft Open Review: Vista — Download Link
While getting myself motivated to hit the road this morning I decided to review a few of the blogs I subscribe to. This particular post in John Dvorak’s blog grabbed my attention and for about a half hour I forgot I drive truck for a living and am already a beta tester for Microsoft. Now understand, I’m not in either camp in regards to religiosity of OS’s. I do currently, and have been a long time Windows user. Have dabbled a bit with Linux and have rolled up my sleeves and gotten down and dirty with many other technologically enhanced toys. It is simply that I find less time to be enthused with beta testing the latest anything. Everyday over the road is a beta test on already purchased pc hardware ranging from my laptop to the Satellite Dish I have mounted on the back of my Volvo VN670 (Which by the way is currently in need of repair). The fatiguing fact is that the beta tests are coming up with consistantly negative results.

Admittedly, eguipment is getting more rigid and much more sturdy given the intricate design manufacturers are using with the available technology common these days. But the bottom line is that due to the road condition, coupled with a suspension system design that makes it seemingly more pleasant to be tossed around in the wake of hurricane Katrina than it is to be situated behind the wheel of modern day load haulers. The technology that most of the world is able to enjoy is lasting but a fleeting moment for OTR drivers.

Regardless, though I am intersted in giving Vista a try in it’s current public beta state, I have to give in to common sense and wait. I hate to depart the edge that I have so often lived on, but by the time Vista comes installed on over-the-counter pc’s, I will probably be in the market for some sort of new window to the cyber world.

Not the kind of message one wants to see on start up. Sadly that is what is displaying on my laptop at bootup. I’m hoping that imminent HD failure holds off till I can get to a place where I can get the laptop into the shop. If it does happen I will hopefully still be able to podcast and post on my Shuttle Desktop here in the truck. Will just have to get a USB Wifi adapter. Fortunately they are available at most Flying J’s.

I’m currently pushing to get my load delivered in Pompano Beach, Fl. Leaving Lake Park, Ga now.

Imminent HD failure

I was talking with my wife the other day and the topic was on forwarded messages from family and friends. You normally just want to delete these annoying forwards and yet you don’t want to hurt the feelings of your loved ones. After speaking to her I reviewed a link to a digg post that referred to a service offered by 43 folders.

Hi there, beloved friend of this email recipient:

Please visit http://thanksno.com/

Because this person likes getting personal messages from you, but doesn’t want any more email like this, please.

Love,
ThanksNo.com

Beautiful! Paste that into a reply to any of these forward messages and educate your friends and family on proper email etiquette without fear of hurting their feelings. Well.. at least less fear of doing so.

Techdirt: Verizon Wireless Also Pretends Customers Don’t Know What Unlimited Means
A clear and concise explaination in this blog post. It definitely has more meaning when it happens close to home. Luckily there is a free and open market. I’m again a happy customer of Flying J WiFi service. TOS is quite strict as well but they have shown themselves to be desirous of retaining customers. Not out paying some poor shmuck to hook a customer only to create a department that has as it’s sole reason of existence, the termination of customers. “Hello, you’ve reached the department of Account Violations Investigations.” Wow. Do we have the name for a new crime show?

Article on EVDO Terms of Service :: EVDOforums.com
Had to hit the forums to find this:

“According to Verizon Wireless’ latest terms of agreement, its Unlimited NationalAccess/BroadbandAccess services cannot be used for “(1) uploading, downloading or streaming of movies, music or games, (2) with server devices or with host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, Voice over IP (VoIP), automated machine-to-machine connections, or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, or (3) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections.”

Further in this article the other providers jump on board and state their right to shut any user down who takes the promise of “unlimited” literally. One wouldn’t think you would have to pay to become a beta tester for this grossly false representation of service.

I don’t generally have time to waste taking surveys or quizzes, but I ran across this one via Evil Genius Chronicles and in taking it was reminded of how diversely different and yet so similar we are on this vast north american continent in which I have the great honor to traverse in my chosen occupation. Most dialect is quite similar but as is pointed out in this quiz, there are still very subtle phrases that are coined and then common to various regions of our country.
If you find a few minutes take the quiz. Not bad for the money spent!
